ROLES
(WE ARE SEEKING ALL ROLES, AND UNDERSTUDIES FOR ALL ROLES)

IMG_3215.JPG

THE EMCEE - The charming and sexually ambiguous host at the Kit Kat Club. Comedic, magnetic and lovable but embraces the dark tendencies of humankind. Strong comedic role. Should be comfortable improvising with the audience. Should be able to move well. Tenor.  If you are auditioning for the ‘Emcee’ you will be asked to read two short monologues found below.

SALLY BOWLES - Character portrayed is female.A British Cabaret performer and the sexy headliner at Berlin's Kit Kat Club. To the outside world, Sally is eccentric, compelling, vivacious, and outrageous - a true free spirit with an artist’s soul. But under her flashy facade, she is far more complicated than she appears. British accent needed but not needed at the audition.  Soprano with a strong belt.

Currently playing on Broadway

CLIFF BRADSHAW - Character portrayed is male, mid 20s-early 30s. An American novelist and English teacher traveling to Berlin. A closeted gay man exploring his sexuality by escaping to Europe. The role is based on Christopher Isherwood. Wit, charisma, presence, and depth. Love interest to Sally. Baritone.

FRAULEIN SCHNEIDER - Character portrayed is female, early 50s-early 70s. A German landlady who rents rooms in her large boarding house. She is wise and worn but with real sparkle and humor. A survivor and a cynic, she carries a sadness with her from years as a lone widow but also possesses humor and genuine affection for Cliff. Loving Herr Schultz and choosing to risk getting engaged could cost her everything, but what price does happiness cost? Alto with strong belt. German accent necessary.

HERR SCHULTZ - Character portrayed is male, early 50s-early 70s. One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers and the owner of a fruit shop. Similar age as Schneider, or slightly younger, he is warm, kind, endearing but not sentimental. There is a survivor here too. Jewish.  High baritone.

FRAULEIN KOST - Character portrayed is female, late 20s-early 50s. Fraulein Kost is a survivor. A sex worker and lodger in Fraulein Schneider's boarding house, she makes things work. A world-weary pragmatist - the winning side is her side and is ready to swap alliances for whatever grass is greener.. Mezzo-soprano with strong belt.

ERNST LUDWIG - Character portrayed is male, late 20s-mid 40s. Life and soul, dependable yet enigmatic, he takes English lessons from Cliff. He’s Cliff’s first ‘true’ friend upon arrival to Berlin. Everyone knows him, everyone loves him. He appears witty, charming and warm but, ultimately, he is a proud member of the Nazi party. Baritone.

AUDITION SIDES FOR ‘THE EMCEE’ AND ’SALLY.’

IF YOU ARE AUDITIONING FOR THE ROLE OF ‘THE EMCEE’ - PLEASE BE PREPARED TO READ THESE LINES:

EMCEE: “Meine Dammen and Herren -- Mesdames et Messieurs -- Ladies and Gentlemen -- and now the Kit Kat Klub is proud to present a most talented young lady from England. Yes-- England! She is so talented, so charming, so woo-who-who. Only yesterday I said to her, “I want you for my wife.” And she said, “Your wife? What would she want with me?” Thank you! I give you, and don’t forget to bring her back when you are finished with her, the toast of Mayfair-- Fraulein Sally Bowles!!”

EMCEE: “Meine Damen und Herren, Mesdames et Messieurs, Ladies and Gentlemen -- Is it a crime to fall in love? Can we ever tell where the heart truly leads us? All we are asking is ein bischen verstandnis -- A little understanding -- Why can’t the world “Leben and Leben lassen” -- Live and Let live?”

IF YOU ARE AUDITIONING FOR THE ROLE OF ‘SALLY’ - PLEASE BE PREPARED TO READ THESE LINES:

SALLY: “Cliff- if you don’t mind -- I should like to withdraw the question. Because -- really -- it’s none of my business. I think people are people, I really do, Cliff. Don’t you? I don’t think they should have to explain anything. For example, if I paint my fingernails green and it happens I do paint them green, well, if someone should ask me why, I say: “I think it’s pretty, (“I think it’s pretty,” I reply.) So, if anyone should ask about you and me one day, you have two alternatives: you can either say, “Oh, yes, it’s true. We’re living in delicious sin.” Or you can simply tell the truth.”
